A Critique of David Shariatmadari’s ‘Why it’s
Time to Stop Worrying about the Decline of the English Language’.
Shariatmadari strongly denies the concept of decline in the English language. He posits that what many consider as decline in the English language is simply an evolution of the language. He claims that there is no evidence in support of decline of English grammar. Consequently, he undertook an historical analysis of the complaints of linguistic decline.
Shariatmadari claims that the warnings of linguistic decline is a recurring theme through different generations and is not restricted to the English language (Shariatmadari 5). He firmly establishes his claim by going as far back as the 14th century, where even then, there were complaints of the deterioration of the English language (Crystal 14). He sufficiently proves that the English language has always experienced change. Further examples he cites in proof this point includes, evidence of similar complaints by German and Arabic linguists of deterioration of German and Arabic languages respectively (Shariatmadari 5). He argues that these complaints are evidence of the fact that linguistic changes are universal and are not restricted to the English language. Unfortunately, this argument is not as strong as the historical evidence first given. Warnings of linguistic decline of two or more languages in the same period are not sufficient to establish his claim that the changes in the English language. Shariatmadari’s claim of the generality of linguistic change on this point is likely to fail, especially when it is considered vis-à-vis Mathew Arnold’s claim that the French language is not in deterioration (Arnold 336). Nevertheless, Shariatmadari argues that the evolution of the English language is not brought about by decline in the language but by several other factors.
For Shariatmadari, the factors behind evolution of the English language are reanalysis, grammaticalisation, metathesis, the human anatomy and social pressure. He claims that reanalysis, metathesis and the human anatomy have caused the spellings of many words to change (Shariatmadari 6). His reasoning and conclusion is ambiguous; while these factors may cause the spelling of certain words to change, he failed to show how the new spellings became the accepted standard. Furthermore, he claims that grammaticalisation and social pressure has contributed to the evolution of the English language by changing the way certain verbs such as ‘will’ and ‘to go’ are used (Shariatmadari 6). He is able to establish this by showing how the latter use of the verbs arises from their earlier use.
To a large extent, Shariatmadari established that the English language is evolving and not declining.
