About this Talent:
I believe everyone has unique skills and talents, and that is what makes each one of us special. People have skills in areas such as playing an instrument, playing sports, being artistic, acting, singing, and many more. People realize their talents at different stages in their lives. Giving back to the community by sharing the skill I have is what makes the difference. Everyone has at least one thing they are really good at. When each of us brings our individual talents together, the world becomes a masterpiece painting.
I am proud to say my special talent is playing badminton. Since 1992 badminton has been an Olympic sport. There are five events: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. To be an excellent player you require aerobic stamina, agility, strength, speed, and precision. Badminton is the world’s fastest racquet sport with smashes reaching speeds of up to 332 km/h.
I have been playing for about 12 years now. I have competed in several tournaments all around the US and have won many trophies and medals. When I won my first tournament at the age of five, it felt like I was on top of the world. My heart was pounding and sweat was dripping off my face. I felt a bolt of energy flow through my body. When I walked to the podium to accept my trophy, I heard a thunderous applause and received a standing ovation. This was the greatest moment of my life. I believe I found my unique skill and talent at that time.
I have been fortunate and blessed with the skill of playing professional badminton and out of the goodness of my heart I like to give back to the community. My family and I have a club where over 30 participants play badminton. We practice from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm every Sunday. We encourage others to learn the sport and improve their health and fitness. Several people have come back saying that they were given another chance to live. At first, doctors had warned them of diseases that they were at risk of encountering if they did not make a change in their lifestyle. So after a few months of playing badminton consistently, and enjoying the sport, they lost weight, improved their stamina, reduced blood pressure, and were able to improve the quality of their lives.
My dad and I coach kids from the ages of 6-16 years of different communities. It brings me great satisfaction to help other children learn and play the sport of badminton. Introducing badminton to younger children has made them active and healthy. I am a role model to the younger generation and they look up to me. I teach them good sportsmanship and motivate them to eat nutritionally.
My parents qualified to play for an International Badminton Tournament in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa last summer. It was a wonderful experience where we got to meet players from all over the world. This was an opportunity for me to also see where my mom was born and raised. At the tournament I volunteered to keep score and be a line judge.
God has given us all a gift of unique skills and talents. We can come together and use our gifts to help our families, communities and the world. We can make a positive difference in the lives of others.
