I can translate from English to Arabic and vice versa. Translating different languages may be tricky and you might need help, so I'm here to help.
Five years ago I was approached by an organisation in the southern US to translate into Hebrew a large graphic novel about a titanic struggle between Good and Evil forces, with a very Christian apocalyptic message. Out of curiosity, more than anything else, I agreed to give a quote. They asked me to translate a sample page, which I did even getting as far as choosing a suitable font and starting to place it into the speech bubbles (see above) but when they saw my quote for the entire book, they declined.
Which is just as well. Certain Christian terms fall decidedly flat in Hebrew—in part because there is no capitalisation in Hebrew, so the solemn significance imparted by capital letters in terms such as Jesus Christ our Lord, or Son of God, is lost; and in part because Hebrew is so intrinsically associated with Judaism that conceptually these terms are alien to the language itself: the only Lord is God himself, who is singular and indivisible, and cannot even be seen, or comprehended, much less personified in any human individual, or thought to be anyone’s father in the literal sense.
I wonder if they found a translator in the end or indeed, who they imagined would be their intended readership. In addition to being impervious to Christian evangelism, Israelis are curiously unaccustomed to graphic novels of any kind: superhero comics are unknown, and even cartoon strips of the sort seen on the ‘funnies’ page in popular North American newspapers have no equivalent in Israeli papers.
