This article aims to shed light on the nature, causes, impacts, and possible solutions to address this pressing issue.
Defining Gender-Based Violence: Gender-based violence refers to any act of violence that is directed against an individual based on their gender or sex, resulting in physical, sexual, psychological, or economic harm. It is deeply rooted in social, cultural, and structural inequalities, perpetuating discrimination and reinforcing harmful gender stereotypes.
Forms of Gender-Based Violence: a. Physical violence: This involves any act that causes bodily harm, such as domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and physical assault. b. Sexual violence: It includes rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, forced marriage, and female genital mutilation. c. Emotional/psychological violence: This form of violence targets an individual's mental well-being through intimidation, gaslighting, humiliation, or emotional manipulation. d. Economic violence: It occurs when one person controls another's financial resources, limiting their economic independence and perpetuating dependency.
